Make the Product Operating Model Stick

Tools aren't going to transform your company.
But in the right hands they can encourage the right habits, guide decisions, and automate busy work.
Our goal with the our POM start pack is to give thoughtful operators a head start when it comes to instrumenting their unique product operating system.
We expect you to adapt this.
We'd love to learn more about your challenges operationalizing the POM at your company.

The Promise

Having a mature product and platform operating model is strongly correlated with business performance outcomes, including 38 percent higher customer engagement and 37 percent higher brand awareness.

The Reality

"The CEO is bought in. We've done the workshops, the classes, hired the coaches, and run successful pilots. Everyone is excited. Now the challenge is doing this at scale, while the train is barreling down the tracks, and going from aspiration to real results."

Go from decks, spreadsheets, and fragmented tools...

Where nothing lasts more than two years before you claim tool/framework bankruptcy

To an internal platform supporting your OS

And then keep iterating as your approach to product and your context inevitably changes over time

There's a reason high-performing product orgs avoid opinionated, heavyweight tools built for scaled project management and delivery. Horses for courses—they're the right tools for some jobs, but not this one.
We pick up where spreadsheets and decks leave off—and where no-code tools (bless their hearts, we love 'em) struggle at scale.
At Dotwork, we believe front-line teams work best when they can choose their own ways of working.
It's operations' job (with help from Dotwork) to create a bidirectional link between leaders and teams—so that creativity and independence are channeled in the right direction.

Everyone is talking about the product operating model. People keep asking us if we have a solution for it. The answer is: yes—but…

How can Dotwork help us put the product operating model into action?

Tools can amplify what's working. In the right hands, they help build new habits, automate busywork, and improve decision quality. But remember: the product operating model, as described by Marty Cagan, is a set of principles—not a plug-and-play system. He makes it very clear that you need to adapt it to your context. Dotwork helps you instrument your operating system and facilitate the right collaboration at the right time, but it's not going to run your transformation for you.

Do you recommend certain ways of working?

Like anyone, we're opinionated—we have our favorite approaches. But in the end, you'll need to adapt the principles to fit your company. Where we can help is with modular packages around continuous discovery, product-oriented funding models, and support for frameworks like the North Star Framework, Zone to Win, OKRs, and more. Mix and match. Get support where and when you need it.

Is Dotwork a roadmapping tool?

At a certain level, yes—but we're not a team-level roadmapping tool. In fact, we strongly recommend investing in one of the many excellent tools built for team-level roadmapping. Once you have that foundation, Dotwork helps solve the bigger-picture challenges of strategic context, alignment, org design, and funding at scale.

Theory

If you’re a product leader, you’ve probably made a slide like this to explain how things work. It’s neat and tidy. It sends a strong message: “We need a vision, we need a strategy, and execution will flow from that foundation.”

First column image

The Mess

But we know that reality is different. Information flows up, down, and across the org. The org chart is constantly changing. Some handle big messy projects, while other groups are on speedboats.

Second column image

With Dotwork

Dotwork helps you model reality, but then make sure you don’t overwhelm your stakeholders with all the dots. Get the right dots into the right conversations, and start creating positive team habits and rituals.

Third column image

There are countless ways to understand team focus. You have to find what works for you.

If you want teams to truly own outcomes, you can't just hand them goals—you have to wire strategy into the way they're funded, focused, and framed for success.
Adapting the product operating model to your context means understanding your company's unique culture and constraints, and making the principles stick in ways your team can celebrate and take pride in.

WHY LEADERS CHOOSE DOTWORK

Designed by Product Leaders, For Enterprise Results

I've watched brilliant product organizations hit walls not because of bad strategy, but because their operating models couldn't scale with their ambitions. The companies that thrive at scale don't just plan better—they've built operating models that evolve in real-time. Dotwork makes that evolution continuous rather than episodic. It's the difference between reshaping your organization quarterly versus adapting it daily.

John Cutler

Systems Thinker, Head of Product at Dotwork

I'm amazed by how Dotwork handles organizational complexity. I've watched companies struggle as they scale from high-growth to enterprise, but Dotwork can grow seamlessly with them. Whether you're managing 15 teams or 1,500, the strategic clarity never gets lost. It's refreshing to finally see an answer to both flexibility and autonomy.

Barry O'Reilly

Co-Founder of Nobody Studios, Author of Lean Enterprise and Unlearn

That's exactly what excites me about Dotwork—it's designed for the reality of modern product development. When portfolio priorities shift overnight, teams using Dotwork stay aligned and keep moving forward. It's brilliant how the platform evolves with strategy changes instead of fighting against them. Context for AI will be the second part of this story that will change everything.

Cullen Childress

Chief Product Officer at SolarWinds

After years of watching companies force-fit their processes into rigid platforms, Dotwork is a breath of fresh air. It molds how organizations actually work—their unique planning rhythms, stakeholder needs, and decision-making styles. The platform becomes an extension of the business rather than a constraint. That kind of adaptability is what separates truly transformational platforms from the rest.
